UHD Alliance announces new Filmmaker Mode TV setting

Aims to maintain creative intent for films and TV shows

The UHD Alliance has announced it is partnering with a number of TV manufacturers to launch a new Filmmaker Mode TV setting, aimed at “preserving creative intent”.

The idea is to convince consumers to turn off motion smoothing on their TVs which, according to some Hollywood directors, “ruins” the cinematic look of their films or TV series.

“Modern televisions have extraordinary technical capabilities, and it is important that we harness these new technologies to ensure that the home viewer sees our work presented as closely as possible to our original creative intentions,” said director Christopher Nolan in a statement.

The new TVs will offer consumers an option to turn off all video post-processing, allowing them to watch films and TV shows with their original frame rates, colours and aspect ratios.
