At the end of 2014, Sony released the film The Interview simultaneously both digitally and in a select range of movie theatres. I observed at the time that this could have proved to be a significant step in how movies were distributed, with ‘day and date’ (releasing digitally at the same time or extremely close to theatrical release) releases possibly becoming a commonplace thing
