Eutelsat Group has announced it has become a member of Greening of Streaming.
The global satellite communications group has joined the not-for-profit group, which aims to promote and develop engineering strategies to reduce energy waste in the streaming industry’s delivery infrastructure.

With a fleet of 35 geostationary and 600 Low Earth Orbit satellites, the company distributes more than 6,500 television channels reaching a billion people around the world. Eutelsat provides services at every stage of transmission, from uplinking images as they are filmed to delivering channels direct to households, feeding cable and IPTV head-ends and DTT transmitters.
Laurence Delpy, president of Eutelsat’s Video Business Unit, commented, “We are delighted to join the Greening of Streaming organisation. Satellites bridge the communications divide, enabling populations to be connected, informed, educated and entertained, no matter how remote their location. New developments, such as the DVB-NIP standard, are enabling us to combine the efficiency of broadcast technology with broadband network techniques, complementing terrestrial networks to deliver a high-quality video streaming experience to users wherever they are located. We are keen to work with stakeholders across the value chain to better understand the impact and electrical consumption of video delivery, both to improve our own energy efficiency and to consider the role of satellite in developing more sustainable video streaming solutions.”
Greening of Streaming president, Ben Schwarz, added, “I’m truly excited to have our first satellite company with deep roots in broadcasting and telecoms join GoS. With Eutelsat on board, we will be able to understand sustainability issues in hybrid distribution situations, including satellite links and satellite broadcast.”
