Popular early evening drama Emmerdale, produced by ITV Studios in the UK, has moved to a new production base and to a tapeless HD workflow, supporting multiple concurrent shoots. EditShare has provided the core technology, including ingest and playout servers, asset management, and backup and archiving.
The programme – which is seen five nights a week – is recorded in part at ITV Studios in Leeds. Two galleries cover multi-camera shoots on permanent sets. Both the vision mixer output and individual cameras are recorded onto Geevs ingest servers with the ability for the director to call up instant replays.
Recordings are transferred immediately as mirrored copies to the EditShare XStream central storage, from where it is available to the network of Avid editors. The recordings are also backed up in EditShare Ark. The cuts made live on the vision mixer are also captured, and translated into an Avid sequence in real time, to speed the process of editing.
EditShare Flow also creates low resolution proxies of all content which is then available across a network of desktop computers, allowing producers, script supervisors and others to check for quality and continuity, and allows sound designers to prepare for a sequence before going into the ProTools suite.
The resulting workflow efficiencies enable the production to meet the expectations of a demanding audience while maintaining the punishing schedule of around two hours of new content a week.
