After 20 months of construction, German public broadcaster Südwestrundfunk’s (SWR) new broadcasting centre began operation in June with an innovative new production system brought to life by Wellen+Nöthen and partners. The pool of vendors included arvato Systems, AmberFin, Avid, MOG Solutions, Aveco and Harmonic, to develop the codec specification AFN-100 that accelerated SWR’s workflows throughout all production areas. Peter Nöthen, managing director at Wellen+Nöthen, stated: “The SWR tender was for functionality that didn’t completely exist in the market. To fulfil SWR’s requirements, we had to specify and develop new codecs and ways of automation, which led to AFN-100 that is now a standard codec — and also a system of complete studio automation that we have shown for the first time here at IBC.” Bertram Bittel, director technology and production at SWR, commented: “Of course, completely file-based work initially meant a large process of adjustment for colleagues, but everyone realised just what enormous advantages the new processes create and how they make work much easier.” Wellen+Nöthen is now working on a project with Al Jazeera. Nöthen said: “This is a huge sports production playout deal. It is bigger, looking at more aspects, but with the same level of innovation that we bought to SWR.” The Al Jazeera collaboration will be completed some time next year. – Heather McLean3.B40
