Dublin post production facility Screen Scene has purchased five XDCAM HD cameras through Eurotek to aid the company's provision of a shooting and post contract for Vision Independent Productions' new reality show 'Celebrities Go Wild'. The show followed celebrities on a seven-day trek along Ireland's west coast with a team of five ENG crews recording close to 24/7, writes Fergal Ringrose.
"We looked at a lot of options in relation to the specific workflow demands of this show. The cameras had to be robust and the workflow extremely fast and simple," commented Jim Duggan, MD of Screen Scene. "The XDCAM gave us everything we needed given the very specific demands of the show I don't think any other format could have handled it."
To meet the demands of live production filming, VIP required a camera that was both durable and reliable. Shooting outside, the camera endured a range of unpredictable weather conditions, from rain and sleet to freezing temperatures and everything else the west coast of Ireland can throw up. XDCAM HD's ability to load proxy footage quickly onto servers played a crucial role in the post workflow, all of which was edited on six Avid edit rooms also supplied by Screen Scene.
"Screen Scene came to us with this solution and it worked" comments Steve Curran, head of production with VIP. "The ENG crews were shooting all day and into the night and everything had to be loaded. The proxies allowed editing to begin immediately and that's what my people were most concerned about, especially with the show airing the same day as filming."
VIP has used the cameras again on 'Operation Transformation' an 8 x 30 minute series for national broadcaster, RTE. Duggan commented: "Outside of the specific requirements of 'Celebrities Go Wild' we have already used the five-camera set-up in multi-camera environments and for other doc and magazine shows. It's an excellent format".
"We are delighted that this production was a great success in producing such spectacular pictures," commented Roy Shufflebotham, sales manager, Sony. "We are committed to constantly delivering cutting edge and versatile technology to enable our customers to create compelling and innovative content."
