S4M takes NDR tapeless

German public broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) has put into operation one of the largest installations of S4M_s Video Production Management System, VPMS.

Deployed by private and public service broadcasters throughout Europe, S4M’s VPMS supports the management of digital video assets from acquisition through production to playout, distribution and archiving.

The system realised at NDR is an integrated solution that consists of several elements. In this context VPMS is a key module that integrates smoothly in other systems and connects them to a consistent overall system. For instance, Annova Systems’ newsroom system Open Media as well as several Final Cut Pro editing suites were integrated in the production system. This way, television editors can access and edit video material on their PC workstations and can easily send VPMS generated editing lists (EDLs) for fine-cut to the Final Cut Pro suites.

The project supports a completely file-based production for NDR. From ingest over voiceover to playout of TV reports, everything is accomplished without tapes.

All TV control rooms in Hamburg are connected to VPMS so far, and programmes such as ‘DAS!’ or ‘Mein Nachmittag’ are now produced without tapes. All newsrooms are supposed to access the system incrementally. In the future, all television programmes produced in Hamburg will be created tapeless with VPMS.
