RTV Noord Holland, the Dutch regional broadcaster based in Amsterdam, has added the Ross Video OverDrive automated production control system in its news studio. The new installation, which went on air towards the end of 2011, also includes a Ross XPression virtual studio system. The system was installed by local dealer Sealander Visions. “The growing demand for fast and accurate news, current affairs and sports coverage forced RTV N-H to look for creative and flexible solutions for an old problem: how to do more and better with less and fewer,” said Wiljan Pongers, head of facilities at RTV Noord Holland. “Together with Sealander Visions and Ross Video we worked towards the OverDrive in combination with the XPression virtual studio. This put the basic building blocks in place, allowing us to maintain the highest level of flexibility, quality and accuracy possible, in the hands of a single operator.” OverDrive is a flexible production control system with a touchscreen interface to access all the devices in the studio environment, including production switchers, audio mixers, robotic cameras, graphics devices and servers. Through an ActiveX plug-in it integrates with all the popular newsroom systems. The Ross XPression is the company’s character generator and motion graphics system. Its rendering power is such that it can provide virtual studio functionality for smaller studios with locked-off cameras, such as are found in regional news operations. Movement is then created using the device’s built-in DVE.
