RTÉ ups industry trend for small SNG vans

UK mobile satellite and broadcast systems integrator Sat-Comm is delivering two new small SNG vehicles using state of the art Ka Band satellite technology for Irish state broadcaster, RTÉ.

UK mobile satellite and broadcast systems integrator Sat-Comm is delivering two new small SNG vehicles using state of the art Ka Band satellite technology for Irish state broadcaster, RTÉ.

The Mercedes-Benz Vito vans, being delivered by the end of March, are the first two of a new fleet of SNG vans for RTÉ. Over the last 10 years Sat-Comm has delivered four large vans for the broadcaster designed for multi-use purposes, however the two new vans are designated specifically for news coverage.

Tim Williams, managing director at Sat-Comm, commented on the deal: “These two new vans for RTÉ are dedicated for news. As they are smaller, they are nimble for fast response. With the latest satellite technology, Ka Band, we can give RTÉ HD quality broadcasts from a small vehicle, with satellite connection made in under a minute.”

He added that smaller vehicles requiring crews to operate of just two-plus people are a growing trend in the industry. “Small vehicles are the way of the world now. Over the last four to five years we have seen the work ethic changing as technology has enabled us to get equipment into smaller vehicles; for instance, in the last four years we have built around 30 small vans for the BBC. For us this is a good trend, as it means vehicles have become more affordable for all sizes of company.”
