Harmonic’s Rhozet Carbon Coder video transcoding product has been selected by Pharos for integration with the Mediator v3 media management system. Pharos selected Carbon Coder to improve digital workflow by integrating previously disparate broadcast and IT technology systems. The Pharos Mediator and Rhozet Carbon Coder combined system is deployed at international broadcaster Viasat, part of the Modern Times Group of companies, writes Fergal Ringrose.

Carbon Coder is used directly within the Mediator workflow to increase efficiency in the production of content for Viasat Broadcasting’s many TV channels, which reach 100 million people across 24 European countries. These workflow improvements include enabling migration from legacy file formats, desktop HD spot-checking and quality control, and digital file sharing with third-party post production facilities that provide remote voiceover and subtitle services.

“Viasat Broadcasting processes as much as 200 hours of new content each day and broadcasts the content in 15 different languages, which requires a very efficient workflow. Viasat also produces promotional campaigns and trailers for all their channels,” said Russell Grute of Pharos. “Rhozet Carbon Coder is used as a high performance core component of the Mediator system to enable very high throughput. We’ve found that Carbon Coder is easily integrated with Mediator and the high performance storage sub-systems, tape-based archive and desktop post production solutions at Viasat to manage files and metadata seamlessly.”

Harmonic’s Rhozet Carbon Coder is a universal transcoding application that facilitates the transfer of media between a variety of platforms, including acquisition, editing, playout, archive, the internet and mobile devices. Carbon Coder can run as a stand-alone application or as part of a multi-node, fully-automated rendering farm, and provides high-performance, scalable and cost-effective transcoding for a broad range of business environments.

“Pharos’s proven technology is used by major service providers to unify media management, workflow and channel management into a single enterprise,” said David Trescot, vice president of the Rhozet Business Unit at Harmonic Inc. “Carbon Coder expands their offering by providing a greater number of supported formats, as well as a significant increase in the efficiency of post production for broadcasters and transmission service providers.”
