New Zealand television production house NHNZ is in the process of becoming HD independent with a latest acquisition of Quantel eQ multi-resolution editing, effects and deliverables system – enlarging its HD line-up which already includes Panasonic Varicam cameras and HD D5 and DVCPRO HD VTRs.

The company now has the ability to shoot, edit and finish HDTV programmes entirely in-house in Dunedin. This makes NHNZ the only HD-capable production house in the South Island of New Zealand.

NHNZ’s General Manager John Crawford said, “While high definition television is still in the future for New Zealand viewers, it is becoming more common in many international territories. Many of our off-shore clients are demanding films made in HD and the purchase of the Quantel eQ allows us to complete the production process, from filming to post, in-house which will ultimately save on time and budget.”

As well as post producing its own programmes on the eQ, NHNZ will be able to do post production work for other clients. For example, commercials shot, edited and finished in high definition can be printed back to film, or down-sampled to standard-definition PAL.

With over 70 programmes currently in production, NHNZ’s crews work in locations around the world to produce a diversity of films for international broadcasters including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Health, National Geographic Channel, France 5, NHK in Japan and NDR in Germany. The company is wholly owned by Fox Television Studios.
