New tool lets producers create interactive programmes, with no coding

Stornaway enables content creators to visually map out stories, write non-linear scripts, collaboratively edit and deliver films and TV series

A new production tool that aims to enable producers to create and deliver interactive films and TV series without the need for coding has been launched.

Stornaway enables TV and film professionals to visually map out their stories, write non-linear scripts, and collaboratively edit and deliver playable films, free from the constraints of technology.

The tool’s player is built with open standards, content can be published on Stornaway’s own platform or exported to other systems.

It has been created by Stornaway co-founders Kate Dimbleby and Rupert Howe, who say they were already developing the tool before Netflix launched its first interactive content, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch in December 2018.

“Interactive storytelling shouldn’t be hard and miserable – it should be fun for creatives, and with Stornaway it is,” said Dimbleby.

Howe added: “The ease of streaming interactivity is going to open up new possibilities for writers and producers to play with multiple perspectives and non-linear stories. But until now, interactive production has been way too complicated and geeky. Stornaway makes the process easy. We offer the only end-to-end solution on the market, and the only system that is compatible with professional production workflows.”

Stornaway has been working with production companies and VoD platforms ahead of the tool’s launch. Since the coronavirus pandemic, the company said it has seen a “surge” in interest from production companies looking for ways to re-version their archive, as well as those working on funded development for new interactive series for streaming platforms.
