Merlin transmits 1080i HD transmission from London

On 9 November, Quicklink tested its Merlin backpack broadcasting solution in the streets of London with the new 4G and 3G network from EE.

On 9 November, Quicklink tested its Merlin backpack broadcasting solution in the streets of London with the new 4G and 3G network from EE. The Merlin backpack encoder bonded together six mobile SIM cards. During the test, five 3G SIMs from 3, O2 and Vodafone were used along with one SIM from the new EE LTE network. The Merlin backpack aggregates both the 3G and 4G networks. If there is no 4G coverage, the Merlin automatically transmits on the available 3G network whilst adjusting to suit the available bandwidth. The Merlin backpack was put to test streaming live broadcast quality video with latency recorded at less than one second. The testing involved presenting from stationary locations and interviewing whilst walking and in moving vehicles in and around the Houses of Parliament. Later in the evening, Quicklink broadcast bonded 3G live from inside the Emirates Airline cable car, 200ft in the air. The Quicklink Merlin backpack encoder also performed after a prolonged duration in a tunnel.www.quicklink.tv
