MediaCityUK specs Calrec

Calrec Audio has been awarded the contract to supply four digital audio mixing consoles and a distributed I/O network system to the MediaCityUK project.

Calrec will supply one 64 fader and two 56 fader Apollo consoles for studios A, B and C, and a 24 fader Artemis console for studio E. All four studios will be used to provide live to air and live to tape content for light entertainment, news and sport.

In addition, all four consoles will be networked via Hydra2 technology. This provides MediaCityUK with a phenomenal amount of flexibility enabling every console to access all I/O resources on the network.

TSL, the UK’s leading creator of integrated broadcast systems, was initially engaged by Peel Holdings in 2007 as a consultant, helping to define the Commercial Block facilities at the MediaCityUK site.

“From the outset we decided that the geography of the building and the physical divisions of studios, control rooms and even public spaces should not restrict the aspirations of MediaCityUK’s clientele,” said TSL’s Audio Applications Manager, Martin Dyster. “With this in mind, the idea of a network of audio mixing and routing systems which could be centrally and locally configured, was conceived.

“We are delighted to be working with Calrec to provide one of the most technically advanced TV broadcast audio systems in the world. The Hydra2 network infrastructure dramatically simplifies the integration and operation of audio systems at MediaCityUK, and the Apollo and Artemis consoles represent a significant advancement in broadcast TV mixing technology.”

The award-winning Apollo console was launched at NAB 2009, and the official global launch of the Artemis console is at IBC2009. Artemis utilises the same core technologies such as Bluefin2 and Hydra2, equipping the console with enormous routing and processing capacity.

“We are delighted to have been given this opportunity to help develop MediaCityUK,” said Calrec European Sales Manager, Chas Rowden.

“MediaCityUK and TSL is committed to providing the UK’s broadcast community with a leading edge facility comprising unrivalled technical and creative resources. It is an extremely complex project and we believe this kind of audio infrastructure will provide the blueprint for future multi-studio installations. The combination of Calrec’s Apollo platform desks and Hydra2 will allow MediaCityUK to make the most of their infrastructure and maximise efficiency.”

Phase One of the MediaCityUK development will be completed in 2011. The facility will house one of the largest high definition studio facilities in Europe, featuring seven HD television studios and two audio studios. MediaCityUK is being developed and managed by Peel Media, a division of the Peel Group.
