HD news to go live in Toronto

With HD making inroads into production environments worldwide, Ross Video’s disclosure that Citytv Toronto will broadcast its news programming in HD from September 2006 represents another important milestone in the format’s deployment.

Citytv Toronto is the flagship channel of Canadian media company CHUM Television, and the HD service is going to be based around Ross’ Synergy 4 MD-X digital production switcher. The station is positioned to become the first daily newscast in Canada to broadcast in HD, when, as part of several CHUM HD initiatives, half a dozen daily shows will all broadcast in HD.

Several CHUM Television stations have now invested in Synergy digital production switchers, while both A-Channel Barrie and now Citytv Toronto have also bought Ross’ OverDrive Production Control System. Installation of the OverDrive production control system and Synergy 4 MD-X digital production switcher is targeted for completion by summer 2006.

“We are thrilled to be working with CHUM Citytv Toronto as they begin a new chapter in live HD production,” said Brad Rochon, OverDrive product manager, Ross Video. “OverDrive, combined with Synergy MD-X, offers a powerful and flexible live production solution for their current and future needs.”

Ross is also on the record as being proud that serial number 1 of the Synergy SD series was also purchased by CHUM, A-Channel Ottawa, and continues its role today in live news production.
