Harris targets OB upgrades

According to estimates by Harris, there are at least 100 modern SD OB trucks ripe for upgrading to HD in Europe alone, writes Dick Hobbs.

According to estimates by Harris, there are at least 100 modern SD OB trucks ripe for upgrading to HD in Europe alone, writes Dick Hobbs.

What’s more, the company acknowledges that this figure may be an underestimate and there could be many more. Indeed, once SNG trucks are included in the count the figure moves up impressively into the thousands.

While each will require a new infrastructure, including monitoring, routing and video processing, Harris points out that this can now easily be accomplished inside the same physical space in the vehicle, making an upgrade a much more economical proposition than replacing the truck.

To demonstrate its ability to provide the necessary equipment and expertise for the outside broadcast market, Harris will be taking an HD truck from Italian provider l’Opera to IBC, which will be on display in the outside exhibits area.

“Harris is the only vendor that can provide all the backbone for a truck,” said product manager, Jochen Kuhnen. “Our Predator and QVM multiviewers have the lowest latency in the market, making monitoring of a lot of HD sources practical. And for SNG we also have the ability to provide contribution-quality compression codecs and network drivers to get the best quality signal back.”
