Harris ships 3Gbps routers

Harris Corporation has begun shipping its first fully functional 3Gbps routing systems. The capability to pass 3Gbps signals is now standard on all HD routing systems purchased from the company's Platinum and Platinum MX lines. "While many manufacturers are still in the development stage when it comes to 3Gbps products, Harris is already shipping routers that will enable broadcasters to keep pace with emerging standards, such as 1080p," said Broadcast Communications division President Tim Thorsteinson, writes Andy Stout.

The high-capacity, small-footprint Platinum and Platinum MX routing switchers provide high-quality signal routing up to 128 x 128 in 9RU, 256 x 256 in 15RU and 512 x 512 in 28RU. Platinum routers offer unprecedented flexibility, claims the company, and support a mix of any signal – video and audio, from analogue to 3Gbps HD-SDI – all in the same frame. Because Platinum routers were designed with all internal paths 3Gbps-capable from their inception, input, output and cross-point cards capable of passing 3Gbps signals are available separately for shipment to existing Platinum HD-SDI router customers.

Harris offers a full range of interoperable, 3Gbps-capable products that span its signal processing and distribution portfolio, including routing, conversion, fibre optics, signal monitoring, channel branding and test and measurement solutions. The idea is that Harris 3Gbps-capable products ensure that infrastructure built today can be upgraded to support 1080p seamlessly and economically when the need arises.
