Discovery Communications has implemented Front Porch Digital’s DIVArchive content storage management (CSM) solution at its Silver Spring post production facility to support deep archiving of all of the company’s production assets.
Because of DIVArchive’s functionality and reliability, Discovery is in the process of expanding its use to become the common system for seamlessly manipulating and moving media files wherever they need to go — from post production to origination all around the world. In choosing DIVArchive, Discovery considered its own experience with Front Porch Digital as a reliable and knowledgeable technology partner, as well as the company’s comprehensive, worldwide support.
Discovery runs DIVArchive at four additional operations worldwide and is currently working on a comprehensive, enterprise-wide plan for replicating, securing, and preserving its abundance of media assets. This plan will be easier to implement and maintain with DIVArchive as the common CSM platform. The project will also require more extensive use of Front Porch Digital’s DIVAnet wide area network solution, which currently supports disaster recovery for Discovery’s Sterling, Va. network origination facility.
At Discovery’s Silver Spring facility, DIVArchive is in use 24/7 to move a heavy load of high bit-rate DNxHD files. The Front Porch Digital solution interfaces with TransMedia Dynamics media asset management to support re-versioning to suit regulatory, timing, and advertising requirements of playout worldwide. Discovery’s deep archive is housed on a DIVArchive-controlled StorageTek SL8500 LTO3 data tape library with 4,000 slots.
