Top London facility, Pepper Post Productions, deployed the da Vinci’s 2K PlusT image enhancing system for HD grading and finishing on the highly-regarded Michael Winterbottom film ‘A Mighty Heart’ starring Angelina Jolie.
“We have a long-standing relationship with Michael Winterbottom and Revolution Films, the production company,” said Patrick Holzen, managing director of Pepper Post Production, which has recently relocated to new facilities in Soho. “When Michael was approached to make the film, he asked us to undertake post production. Our reputation rests on our people first, but there is also the matter of having the right tools. For image enhancement, that means da Vinci’s 2K Plus. It offers maximum flexibility and speed besides being recognised and respected industry-wide.”
Revolution Films entrusted Pepper to ensure the highest standards were achieved from conform and grade to the final online and creation of the DI negative. Pepper was also responsible for creating the HD and SD video masters from the interpositive using the da Vinci 2K Plus.
‘A Mighty Heart’ was originated on and graded from HDCAM SR, which has a low compression that offers a high-quality transfer. Because editing changes were made during the grading session, da Vinci’s ColorTrace technology was indispensable, enabling automatic updating of colour grading sessions to match editorial changes, potentially saving hours of manual copying and list manipulation.
The da Vinci 2K Plus also meets the demands of feature film work with the flexibility of PowerTiers, affording each channel its own PowerWindowsT and Super Kilovector qualifiers for the adjustment of hue, saturation, and luminance.
“Pepper Post enjoys a global reputation for high quality and award-winning professionalism, as well as for offering that personal touch,” said Bill Robertson, general manager of da Vinci Systems. “The da Vinci 2K Plus not only aids in efficiency, its comprehensive toolset gives colourists the flexibility they need to do their best work on high-visibility projects like ‘A Mighty Heart’ and on every project.”
