CNN commits to optical XDCAM HD

CNN will use Sony’s XDCAM HD Professional Disc system for studio production and field newsgathering, as part of an expected network-wide commitment to the optical technology, writes Ken Kerschbaumer.

The network will begin using the XDCAM HD camcorders and decks for high-definition ENG and news production applications and will roll-out the XDCAM HD system to its global newsgathering operation.

The benefits and capabilities of Sony’s optical technology are well-suited to the daily demands of gathering, producing and airing news programming, and should help CNN to supply high-quality HD native content for its upcoming launch of an HD network.

In addition to the benefits of HD resolution images, Sony understands that CNN will use the XDCAM system’s interoperable file format and network-efficient data rates to help complete the transition to file-based news production.
