BR chooses to follow Leader

Bavaria's state broadcaster, Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), has selected Leader LV7700 rasterising digital multistandard waveform monitors for use in each of three new video post production suites at its regional studios in Vienna. Each suite is equipped for HD-SDI and SD-SDI operation in preparation for the gradual introduction of 1080i transmissions.

Bavaria’s state broadcaster, Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), has selected Leader LV7700 rasterising digital multistandard waveform monitors for use in each of three new video post production suites at its regional studios in Vienna. Each suite is equipped for HD-SDI and SD-SDI operation in preparation for the gradual introduction of 1080i transmissions.

All three LV7700 instruments were ordered by the Vienna office of Mainz-based broadcast system integrator BFE Studio- und Medien Systeme GmbH. The rasterisers will be enable monitoring of signal quality throughout each suite including signal flow from legacy VTRs to Avid nonlinear edit suites

“Leader’s LV7700 rasterisers were the obvious choice for this application,” commented Munich-based BR project engineer Frank Roesner. “The colour level display is particularly easy to use, showing a bargraph which turns from green to red if legal levels are exceeded. Our editors really like that. And we also liked the price.”

The LV7700 instruments were purchased via Wien Schall GesmbH, Austrian partner of elQuip BV, Broadcast Master Distributor for Leader Electronics Corporation in Europe.

“Astute broadcasters, editors and colour shaders are increasingly adopting rasterisers for studio and environments,” observed Paul Vos, managing director of elQuip BV. “The LV7700 is just 1RU high and half rack-width so its panel space, when installed in a workstation, is extremely small. Viewing its output on a 15-inch or 19-inch LCD allows every detail of a waveform, vector display or even the picture itself to be inspected easily. It is also an ideal instrument for today’s multi-standard world, handling all the HD and SD standards currently in common use.”

In addition to its waveform monitor and vectorscope functions, the LV7700 includes cursor measurement facilities, filters, gain and timing control. A line-select feature permits detailed signal examination. Safe-action, safe-title and aspect-ratio markers can be generated over the picture display, further increasing the instrument’s value in production and post. The picture display can also be zoomed into a high magnification mode. Waveform, vector, picture, audio and status/protocol screens can be selected individually or as four-in-one simultaneous displays.

All screens can be captured and stored for subsequent superimposition over live measurements. This feature is particularly useful for signal comparison in production, colour-balance and level-matching applications. Captured screens can be stored to Compact Flash memory as a bitmap for production purposes such as stage set and position matching as well as proof-of-performance logging either in realtime or embedded timecode.

The LV7700 also incorporates Leader’s unique equivalent cable-length feature which provides efficient warning against deterioration of the digital pulse waveform as cable feeds approach their maximum safe length.
