AMV BBDO had added Blackmagic’s Teranex 2D standards and frame rate converter to their post production LAB for use in remastering television commercials for broadcast.
Since 2006 the LAB has been using software to standards convert assets by ad agency AMV BBDO. However, Sam Johnson, senior product engineer at AMV BBDO found the results not up to par with that of a hardware converter.
Johnson explained: “We convert to and from all sorts of formats. In this day and age your shop must be able to handle everything, either during the asset acquisition stage or at delivery. That said, due to some of our international clients we find ourselves converting a lot of 29.97 HD material to 25fps HD/SD for regional delivery. For a 1RU box, the Teranex has an amazing amount of I/O. From HD-SDI to HDMI the connectivity is all there. We investigated some software solutions though nothing we evaluated matched that of hardware. With the affordability of the Teranex with all its features it was a no-brainer for the LAB.”
In the LAB all assets are quality checked and media managed to the correct frame size and timebase. If AMV BBDO receive assets that are not to its specification they can utilise the Teranex to remaster those assets.
“We’ve recently used the Teranex for a Guinness campaign that used a mixture of 23.98 and 25fps Phantom and FS700 rushes. Also in a Johnson & Johnson campaign the client wanted to use SD NTSC material in a HD 25fps edit, the Teranex made up cross-converting of these assets incredibly easy,” added Johnson.
