AMPAS investigates automated speech restoration tools, conform management software for possible awards

The organisation said it is making the investigations public so that individuals and companies with devices or "claims of innovation" within these areas can submit achievements for review

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has launched six distinct scientific and technical investigations in the lead-up to next year’s Scientific and Technical Awards.

The organisation said it is making the investigations public so that individuals and companies with devices or “claims of innovation” within these areas can submit achievements for review.

The six areas are:

  • Small pyrotechnic devices that are safe to use in proximity to cast and crew
  • Layered shading systems for computer-generated imagery
  • Software suites for stop-motion photography
  • Systems for custom art styles in animated features
  • Automated speech restoration tools
  • Conform management and sound auto-assembly software

“We are inspired by the remarkable innovation shown in this year’s applications. Guided by a diverse committee of industry leaders, we are excited to learn more about the novelty, impact, and adoption of these and similar technologies,” said Scientific and Technical Awards Committee co-chairs Darin Grant and Rachel Rose.

After thorough investigations in each technology category, the committee will meet to vote on recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors, which will make the final awards decisions, said AMPAS.

The Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation will be held on 28th April, 2026.
