Italian broadcasters RAI and Mediaset have begun migrating their TV channels to MPEG-4 as part of changes to digital terrestrial broadcast frequencies in order to make room for 5G.
From today (October 20th) broadcasters will discontinue MPEG 2 encoding.
The change will affect Rai 4, Rai 5, Rai Movie, Rai Yoyo, Rai Sport+ HD, Rai Storia, Rai Gulp, Rai Premium and Rai Scuola, which are all switching to DVB-T MPEG-4 encoding.
The move away from the 700 MHz spectrum is due to be completed by June 2022, freeing it up for 5G mobile connectivity.
Details of the full switch-off of MPEG-2 have not yet been announced.
