UK Government reveals plans for ‘dedicated stakeholder forum’ to look at future of DTT

TVBEurope understands the forum will include stakeholders from the TV and infrastructure sectors as well as viewers in order to reflect a full range of views on the topic

The UK Government has revealed plans to launch a new dedicated stakeholder forum to look at the future of digital terrestrial television (DTT).

Speaking at last week’s DTG Summit, media minister Julia Lopez discussed how audiences are moving away from traditional DTT to IPTV.

She added that while the government wants to encourage the TV sector to keep embracing innovation and technological development, it is not going to “pull the rug” from viewers who watch via traditional DTT, and has thus committed to the future of DTT until 2034.

She added that the government has a responsibility to audiences, adding that it wants to “ensure they continue to have access to reliable, free-to-view television in a format that’s familiar to them”.

That will involve a new dedicated stakeholder forum to ensure the industry and audiences “come together to deliver on the ambitions,” added Lopez.

TVBEurope understands the forum will include stakeholders from the TV and infrastructure sectors as well as viewers in order to reflect a full range of views on the topic.

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport is expected to set out more details about the forum in due course.

Last week Ofcom provided the government with a report on the future of TV distribution, which said the UK needs a “common vision” on the future of DTT.
