The R&D and product development landscape 2025: Irdeto

Steve Russell, SVP Global Markets at Irdeto, discusses the industry's challenge of balancing the demand for fast, seamless content delivery with the need for robust, invisible protection

What impact have the current global uncertainties had on the company’s R&D and product development in recent months?

The current global environment has underscored the importance of agility, scalability, and security in every phase of R&D. At Irdeto, we have accelerated development in cloud-first and modular solutions that allow broadcasters and operators to pivot quickly without compromising stability.

This includes ongoing investment in Irdeto Experience, our platform that enables operators to simplify content aggregation and improve service flexibility. We have also strengthened our anti-piracy solutions, expanding our detection, enforcement, and intelligence capabilities to better support customers facing an increasingly aggressive threat landscape.

What do you foresee as the biggest challenges in R&D and product development or deployment in the coming years?

One of the most pressing challenges will be balancing the demand for fast, seamless content delivery with the need for robust, invisible protection. As service providers expand across OTT, broadcast, and FAST platforms, securing premium content without adding operational friction will become more complex.

Piracy is also growing more sophisticated. The real-time nature of live content, particularly sports, creates new pressure for instant threat detection and takedown. This is where our Irdeto Anti-Piracy Suite is evolving, combining forensic watermarking, automated detection, and legal enforcement into one cohesive response.

Where do you see the most opportune areas for innovation in your area of the market, and what tech or solutions will drive that development?

There is enormous opportunity in transforming fragmented broadcast and streaming ecosystems into unified, secure, and efficient platforms. Irdeto Experience is designed to do exactly that. It enables seamless service delivery, advanced personalisation, and faster onboarding of new content and monetisation models.

In parallel, our anti-piracy technology is evolving beyond detection. The integration of watermarking, multi-DRM, and real-time analytics enables proactive protection of content at scale. This makes it possible for broadcasters and streaming services to respond to piracy as it happens, not after the damage is done.

Artificial intelligence, automation, and smarter user insights will continue to drive innovation. These tools will allow companies to operate more efficiently while delivering more compelling and secure viewer experiences.

What are you working on currently that excites you as a product team, and what can we expect to see at IBC2025?

We are currently focused on expanding the capabilities of Irdeto Experience, enhancing its super-aggregation engine, service monitoring, and monetisation features. It is an exciting time as we help customers evolve from legacy operations into intelligent, data-driven platforms.

We are also deepening the integration of Irdeto Control, our multi-DRM solution, with TraceMark forensic watermarking and our wider anti-piracy suite. This allows for faster identification and takedown of illegal streams, which is essential in protecting live sports, premium content, and advertising revenue.

At IBC2025, you can expect to see a future-ready ecosystem that brings together content security, operational efficiency, and viewer experience into one unified platform. We look forward to showcasing how Irdeto is empowering the next generation of video services.
