Ofcom approves BBC’s plan to move more children’s content online

Iconic afternoon Newsround bulletin will move to the iPlayer and online

Ofcom has given the greenlight to the BBC’s plans to move more of its content for children online, including the iconic Newsround afternoon bulletin.

BBC wants to make the changes as it attempts to halt declining numbers among younger viewers.

Newsround’s afternoon bulletin will move online and onto the iPlayer, but the morning programme will remain on CBBC.

In its ruling Ofcom said, “Our research shows that children are increasingly consuming content online, while they’re watching much less traditional, scheduled television on the TV set. The evidence also shows that these trends have continued during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Given these shifts in children’s media habits, we maintain that it makes sense for the BBC to provide more children’s content online. This should help the BBC to engage better with its youngest audiences, who are critical to its future success.”

Newsround first began broadcasting an afternoon bulletin in 1972.
