Speculation is rife that a new HDMI standard that will deliver higher bandwidths and resolutions than its predecessor will be announced at CES Show in January.
The HDMI Forum has sent out invites to a press conference on January 6th, teasing a “new specification, with next-gen HDMI technology and higher bandwidth”, which it says will enable a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates.”
HDMI 2.2 is expected to go above the resolutions and refresh rates currently supported by HDMI 2.1, which supports 48Gbps, enabling 4K 120 Hz or 8K 60 Hz (or even higher refresh rates with signal compression).
The new standard could enable uncompressed support for 8K 120 Hz or 10K at higher frame rates.
It is also expected to employ High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 2.2, which is designed to stop the unauthorised copying of digital video content.
