France’s TDF tests live DTT broadcasts via 5G

The company said it is working towards making DTT content available on mobile within three years

French infrastructure operator TDF is testing live broadcasting DTT and radio on mobile this summer as part of a project initiated by France Télévisions.

The real-time test, made possible by 5G Broadcast technology, is a first in France, said the company.

Viewers with smartphones equipped with a Qualcomm chip specially configured for the test will be able to watch France Télévisions France 2, France 24 and Arte in Île-de-France, Nantes and Bordeaux, thus enabling them to watch the broadcaster’s Olympics coverage.

Speaking about the project, Karim El Naggar, general manager of audiovisual and networks at the TDF group, said: “TDF’s DNA is steeped in innovation. We plan to make DTT accessible on mobile within three years, and thus meet the needs of younger people in terms of content consumption.

“We are delighted to collaborate with various publishers, including France Télévisions, for this live test which underlines our commitment to maintaining DTT and spreading its service offering to a wider audience.”
