Discovery’s new streaming service to launch globally on January 4th

Discovery Plus will debut in 25 key markets in 2021, including the Nordics, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

Discovery has announced its new global streaming service will roll-out globally at the beginning of 2021.

Having already launched in the UK and Ireland, Discovery Plus will debut in 25 key markets in 2021, including the Nordics, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. It will officially launch on January 4th.

One key element of the direct-to-consumer service will be its Olympics content. Discovery said it intends to make the SVoD the new streaming home of the Olympic Games in Europe and Eurosport’s premium sport offering.

Speaking at the launch event, Discovery CEO David Zaslav described the ad-free streamer as “the most distinct, clear and unique streaming service in the world.” He said the broadcaster has been working on the launch for two years.

Zaslav added it will launch with 50 exclusive series, more than any other streamer. “I believe Discovery Plus will be a compelling, powerful and attractive offering to everyone in the family all over the world and will be a huge global success,” he added.

He also promised original content will debut 52 weeks of the year, and the streamer will launch with over 55,000 episodes – the first time Discovery has opened its entire library to viewers all over the world.

Zaslav revealed the SVoD has already secured major distribution agreements including Telecom Italia in Italy and Sky in the UK. He added that sign-ups in UK already exceeded Sky and Discovery’s expectations in the first two weeks Discovery Plus has been available to Sky Q viewers.
