The German Institute of Arbitration has ruled against Discovery in its attempt to terminate its media rights contract with the German Football League (DFL).
Discovery had cited a “special termination” clause in its deal that can be used in the event of an unforeseen circumstance, such as the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic. The court ruled that was invalid.
The DFL released a statement stating that the court has said the ruling serves is a final judicial judgement between the parties and that the rights contract with the broadcaster is still in place.
Discovery has a four-season deal for Bundesliga rights which runs to the end of the 2020-21 season.
It remains to be seen whether Discovery will now broadcast the 45 matches it owns the rights to.
