Netflix has revealed it has begun streaming HDR10+ content to AV1-enabled devices.
In a post on the Netfilx Tech blog, the company said it previously enabled AV1 encoding for SDR content, which led to more consistent visual quality, lower play delay and increased streaming at the highest resolution.

AV1-SDR is the second most streamed codec at Netflix, behind H.264/AVC, added the company. “With the addition of HDR10+ streams to AV1, we expect the day is not far when AV1 will be the most streamed codec at Netflix,” said the blog post.
Netflix has now added HDR10+ streams to both new releases and existing HDR titles. AV1-HDR10+ now accounts for 50 per cent of all eligible viewing hours, said Netflix.
The company added it intends to expand its HDR10+ content with the goal of providing the experience for all of its HDR titles by the end of this year.
However, it added that it will continue to accept only Dolby Vision masters on the ingest side.
