BBC releases LUTs under zero-cost licence

According to the broadcaster, the wider release will make it easier for others to access and adopt the LUTs in order to create more content in high dynamic range (HDR)

The BBC is making the latest version of its Look-Up Tables (LUTs) available under a zero-cost licence for both production companies and manufacturers.

According to the broadcaster, the wider release will make it easier for others to access and adopt the LUTs in order to create more content in high dynamic range (HDR). The zero-cost licence will enable production teams to incorporate the LUTs into their workflows with no cost.

The BBC said it has decided to release the LUTs as development has reached maturity and it expects to release fewer updates in the future.

The LUTs were originally designed to enable live and non-live workflows for events like the Super Bowl and Glastonbury. They are used widely in the industry and are part of the broadcaster’s dual-output workflow for live production that recently won a Technology and Engineering Emmy.

The BBC is working with both the ITU and SMPTE to simplify the use of LUTs in production, and said it hoped to have a newer file format for the LUTs based on xml – with metadata to automate roll-out across devices – soon. These will be made available under the same zero-cost licence, it added.
