Aiming to provide its Flightcase 9 production unit with a single, scalable and flexible solution to meet all of its live production requirements, the TV and media production company has selected Sony’s MLS-X1 live production switcher.

The compact unit combines a video processing structure with a GPU-based graphics and effects module, and supports real-time processing of 4K (UHD) and HDR videos with extremely low latency, said the company. MLS-X1 can be configured to support 100G IP and 12G/3G/1.5G SDI input and output interfaces, with both offering format conversion for incoming and outgoing signals. The logical switcher configuration, which can consist of multiple MLS-X1 units with IP and SDI interface, is also possible for mixed IP and SDI operation.
Modularity of individual components aims to provide Studio Berlin with a high level of reliability, especially at remote production locations around the world. The unit also features extensive and detailed ST 2110 integration options with user friendly system menus and configuration interfaces.
Florian Sprengepiel, head of flight case and reality production at Studio Berlin, said, “The production requirements of our internationally deployed flight case units vary greatly. An 80-camera reality TV format abroad places different demands on the entire signal chain than a show format on a studio lot in Germany. We were therefore looking for a system that could be flexibly and scalably adapted to the size and type of productions and with which we could grow in a future-proof way. The modularity of the MLS-X1 and the ICP-7000 control panel fulfils these requirements and enables us to use the existing technical capacities efficiently. The interaction at ST2110 level is also crucial. The MLS-X1 integrates well into our VideoIPath orchestrated FCR09 flight case unit, allowing us to take full advantage of the harmonised ecosystems from Sony and Nevion.“
“We developed the MLS-X1 precisely for this type of application,“ added Georg Armborst, key account manager, media solutions Sony Europe. “Thanks to its modularity and scalability, the MLS-X1 is highly reconfigurable as a video switcher platform. In addition, it offers high computing power, provides the reliability we have come to expect from Sony live switchers and thus expands creative production possibilities.“
