How IP and high-density infrastructure are powering the coverage of every kick of the global football tournament

Appear’s Andy Rayner explores how moving to a hybrid, IP-based infrastructure is enabling broadcasters to build the flexible, reusable architectures needed to compete long after the final whistle

This summer’s tournament is not simply bigger than its predecessors; it is fundamentally different. Expanded to 48 teams and 104 matches across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States, it represents the most geographically ambitious live sports production ever. The official International Broadcast Centre, operated by Host Broadcast Services at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, sits at the heart of a production footprint that spans over 4,000 kilometres. Over fibre, that distance translates to less than 20 milliseconds of latency: barely a single frame. IP-centric distributed production makes geography like this operationally manageable in a way that would simply not have been possible a decade ago.

Appear is positioned at the heart of this infrastructure. Our full hardware portfolio, the X20, X10 and X5, spans both the production contribution path and the primary distribution path, meaning that in practice, every goal, every red card and every decisive moment travels over Appear hardware. The X20 handles ultra-dense centralised production and core REMI environments; the X10 supports contribution workflows; and the X5 enables remote commentary. That is not a single point-solution win. It is a platform story across the entire signal chain.

Football is not new territory for Appear; we already support more than 3,000 football matches a year across Europe. What makes this summer different is the sheer scale, the geography and the concentration of some of the world’s most demanding broadcast organisations all working in parallel. The tournament has become a proving ground for the infrastructure investments that rights-holders and service providers have been making for a number of years.

FOX Sports is one clear public example: it is using the X Platform to refresh its Home Run Productions remote production infrastructure and its Jewel Events production systems, built around SMPTE ST 2110 and JPEG XS. X20 systems sit in core remote and premium production environments, while X5 systems support commentator workflows. The significance goes beyond the technical specification. It shows how a broadcaster can use a single platform family across multiple latency, bandwidth and production models without creating separate operational islands, each with its own training burden, spares inventory and support overhead.

The same reusable logic is visible elsewhere. NBC Sports deployed the X Platform for the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, with its engineering leadership describing remote production as the cornerstone of venue coverage and citing Appear’s encoding and transport as enabling more cameras and feeds across its enterprise than before. PSSI’s recent investment in Appear equipment was framed explicitly around next-generation workflows and the demands of the world’s most prominent live events, describing the X Platform as giving the flexibility and scalability needed for everything from regional sports to the most complex international broadcasts. These are not event-specific purchases. They are infrastructure investments with a long shelf life.

The production model taking shape around this tournament is hybrid: rights-holders still require a meaningful on-site presence for presentation, unilateral content and the talent-facing elements that bring an event alive. What sits behind it—replay operations, graphics, editing, highlights, commentary integration, master control—is increasingly centralised. 

My view is that by the next edition of this football tournament, the balance will have shifted further towards centralised and software-based production. That does not diminish the importance of robust contribution infrastructure, if anything it increases it. As workflows grow more distributed, the systems linking venue, hub, cloud and rights-holder operations become more critical, not less. Dense, resilient IP infrastructure is no longer just a transport layer. It is the connective tissue that makes modern live production work. 

The broadcasters and service providers that emerge strongest from this summer will be those who used the tournament to build a flexible, reusable production architecture they can carry into the next season, the next event and the next rights cycle. That, more than any single match result, is a prize worth competing for.
