Sky Italia prepares for IP and 4K UHD with Grass Valley cameras

Cameras can also be used for remote production

Sky Italia has selected Grass Valley’s LDX 86N cameras as it prepares to upgrade its studios to IP and 4K UHD.

The cameras include Grass Valley’s DirectIP functionality, which enables the base stations and cameras to be linked through an IP network. According to the vendor, when combined with SMPTE ST2110 IP infrastructure, this set up gives users the freedom to optimise equipment usage and allocate camera resources flexibly as needed.

The DirectIP functionality also means the cameras can be used for remote production as the XCU UXF base station can be located up to 20,000 kilometres away from the camera.

Enzo Paradisi, engineering director at Sky Italia, commented, “We are also laying important groundwork for migration to SMPTE ST2110-based IP infrastructure and can operate in hybrid environments in the meantime.”
