Sony shoots for a 4K goal

Sharing lessons learned from its pioneering experiments in 4K live production this summer, Sony’s IBC presence will show how it is living up to the promise of a future ‘beyond definition’.

Last month, Sony trialled a 4K live production workflow at the Confederations Cup in Brazil, where it also provided 2D venue facilities, including systems integration services, event equipment and technical facilities and operations for host broadcaster HBS.

The outcome of these tests is being used by Sony and FIFA to determine to what extent a 4K production, or even live 4K broadcast, is possible at next year’s World Cup also in Brazil. Quad-HD signals were routed around a Sony-built Telegenic outside broadcast truck from Sony F55 cine-style 35mm cameras fitted with zoom lens adapters (pictured).

In addition, Sony was responsible for shooting and recording part of this year’s Wimbledon Championships in 4K, in partnership with the All England Lawn and Tennis Club.

“IBC2013 is a landmark event as it offers us the opportunity to meet with many of our customers and debate the future of the broadcast industry,” said Olivier Bovis, Head of AV Media, Sony Europe. “It gives us the chance to explain how we have overcome the challenges of filming some of the world’s largest events in 4K. We are always excited to meet with our customers and partners and listen to their feedback. It is only by working in such close collaboration that we can retain our position at the heart of the industry.”
