IBC is the launch pad for Sony’s new 50Mb/s handheld HD camcorder the PMW-150, part of the XDCAM 422 line-up and sited between the PMW-100 and 200.

The model features 3 x 1/3 inch Exmor CMOS sensors, integrated 20x zoom lens with three independent control rings for focus, zoom and iris. Recording options include a choice of SD, memory stick and XQD cards. A wi-fi option permits control of the camera from a tablet or smartphone.

The model is a ‘What Caught My Eye’ show pick of roving expert Alan Roberts who enthused: “This is a mould-breaking entry level camera with a broadcast level codec. It really goes up against the Canon XF305 which Sony realise they need to compete with.”

“It is attractive for broadcasters and videographers who want the flexibility to choose 35Mb/s or to shoot 50Mb/s depending on what their workflow is,” said Strategic Marketing Manager, Bill Drummond. “It’s lightweight, flexible and performs well in low-light conditions.”

The camera ships in November.
