Thunderbolt I/O technology in the Pegasus line of hardware RAID storage systems is set to prove a high-speed performance boost for rich media workflows, by Michael Burns.
Pegasus will be demoed on the Promise stand as a 4-bay or 6-bay RAID enclosure, supporting seven RAID modes including RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10. Pegasus features two Thunderbolt Technology ports, an aluminium enclosure in a small form factor, and a smart fan for reduced system noise.
Intel’s Thunderbolt technology was specifically designed with video and audio applications in mind, offering inherently low latency and highly accurate time synchronisation capabilities. With 10 Gbps of full-duplex bandwidth per channel, it simplifies the end-user experience by concurrently supporting data (PCI Express) and display (DisplayPort) connections over a single cable. Utilising Thunderbolt technology high-speed I/O, Pegasus can deliver performance up to 864MB/s, more than 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and 12 times faster than FireWire 800.
Also being featured on the Promise stand is the new VTrak x30 RAID subsystem, a massively scalable 8G Fibre Channel storage subsystem designed to provide 24/7, 365 enterprise-class availability. Powered by Intel Xeon C3500 Series processors and optimised to work within a Mac OS X environment, the VTrak x30 Series offers up to four times more performance than the previous generation of the VTrak system, delivering up to 5.5 GB/s for reads and 2.2 GB/s for writes.
