My IBC: John O’Shaughnessy, head of technology operations, dock10

With 25 IBC Show's under his belt, dock10's John O’Shaughnessy explains how the event remains fresh thanks to it ability to continue to meet the changing needs of the industry

How long have you been going to IBC?

I have been attending IBC for over 25 years, equally split between my time at ITV and dock10.

What’s your typical IBC routine: what are you there to see/learn, who are you there to meet?

Planning my time pre-show is a key factor in attending. Each year brings different focus areas, depending on dock10’s immediate and up-and-coming needs, and the size of the show necessitates the planning. Whilst at the show, it’s important for me to balance the mix of time spent on stands with key established, and potentially new, suppliers along with off-stand networking with industry colleagues, clients, partners and friends. Along with planned meetings and events, it’s important to ensure there is sufficient free time to wander the halls to observe and pick out any new products and technologies.

Why is IBC important to you in a professional capacity, and how does the show compare to others on the calendar?

Keeping up to date on the latest evolving technologies, strategies and trends is essential for me and attending shows like IBC aids in fuelling this. The networking opportunities assist in maintaining and enhancing the industry profiles of myself, work colleagues and of dock10.

Due to its long-standing reputation for continually evolving and catering for the changing needs of the industry over many years, IBC has managed to remain relevant and fresh.

Being in a European time zone and easy to get to, results in a large volume and diversity of exhibitors and attendees and adds to the reasons for my attendance.

What are you most looking forward to at IBC2024?

I’m hoping to see better innovative and practical applications of AI. There are many references to the use of AI, and it was the prominent buzz at last year’s broadcast shows, but most applications have focussed on familiar tools and concepts. It would be good to see how these have developed and applied more uniquely.

What’s your top tip for anyone attending IBC for the first time?

Comfy shoes are without a doubt my top tip as you will certainly get your steps in and there are too few places to grab a seat.

Oh also, avoid being tempted down to The Beach too early as you will likely not return to the show that day!
