ABOX42 announces OPA for IBC2015

ABOX42 is to unveil its new secure and managed Android STB platform for the global operator market, ABOX42 OPA (Operator Android)

ABOX42 is to unveil its new secure and managed Android STB platform for the global operator market, ABOX42 OPA (Operator Android).

Currently operators face several challenges when they want to introduce ‘retail’ Android features and services, like third party apps, web browsing or home networking. Current Android STBs are mostly designed for the fast moving customer retail market, ABOX42 asserts, and like mass-market mobile phones, these STBs are not well suited to the security and lifecycle needs of professional operators.

ABOX42 OPA was designed from the ground up for security and management of the smart STB. ABOX42 OPA runs on the new M30 and M40 ABOX42 smart STB platforms which offer an ARM base processor for a fluent user interface and Android experience. The ABOX42 M30 and M40-series smart STBs are available for OTT/IPTV and Hybrid-DVB (T/T2,C, S2) and support HEVC/H.265 up to 4K/UHD content. M30 and M40 offer built in, operator grade hardware security which allows it to run state-of-the art DRM systems like Verimatrix for HD and UHD content.

ABOX42 OPA is integrated into ABOX42 lifecycle management SaaS services, so software, application and security updates can be easily deployed during the entire lifecycle of the STBs in the field. Additionally, ABOX42 OPA offers security functions like the ability to control the selection of Android applications, which can be installed on the smart STB.

“We see more and more operators who are looking at retail features of Android like web browsing, home networking or certain third party apps for marketing purposes or to enhance their product offering” said Matthias Greve, CEO of ABOX42. “With ABOX42 OPA we bring Android to the security level which is required by operators to protect their business model and revenue streams.”
