European linear OTT pay-TV subs hit 7.4 million

September 2017 figure represents 13 per cent increase on previous quarter

Linear OTT pay-TV subscribers throughout Europe hit 7.4 million in 2017, according to Dataxis research. 

The research reported the figure from the end of September last year, marking a 13 per cent growth on the previous quarter.

Dataxis said linear OTT growth in recent years has been driven by specialised content such as sports and kids’ content, with OTT sports platforms such as Bein Sport Connect, Eleven Sports and Dazn attracting a “significant number of sports fans” representing 25 per cent of the total linear OTT subscribers as of Q3 2017.

The report also found that Western European countries are leading the sport OTT market with Germany (35 per cent), France (25 per cent) and the UK (15 per cent).
