App Annie: Disney Plus is “catering to a clear demand” in Europe

"Has demonstrated a killer ability to co-exist with Netflix"

Disney Plus is “catering to a clear demand amongst Europe’s population,” ranking as the ninth most downloaded video streaming app in The Netherlands in January 2020, App Annie has found.

The research forecasts a strong European launch for the new SVoD on 24th March.

In 2019, Netflix was the second ranked video streaming app by time spent in the UK, France and Germany. However, App Annie noted that “Disney Plus has demonstrated a killer ability to co-exist with Netflix.”

In the US, nearly 25 per cent of Netflix’s iPhone users also use Disney Plus. “This is the highest overlap of users among top video streaming apps in the US,” said the report.

Disney Plus was the eighth most downloaded video streaming app in the US in 2019 across iOS and Google Play. In December, it was the sixth ranked app by consumer spend among all non-gaming apps worldwide.

“COVID-19 will see more of us at home for longer periods of time,” said App Annie. “With schools closed, parents will look to services like Disney Plus to entertain their children, for example. Disney has already reacted to this by bringing the launch of Frozen 2 to Disney Plus forward by two months.”
