Disgruntled Game of Thrones viewers told to tweak TV settings

Cinematographer responds to viewer complaints

Game of Thrones cinematographer Fabian Wagner has blamed HBO’s compression of Sunday’s episode after dark visual quality drew complaints from viewers.

Wagner recommended that fans watch the show in a dark environment and not on a phone, suggesting that they tweak their TV settings before rewatching.

The episode, titled The Long Night, featured the long-awaited battle with the Night King.

The cinematographer explained that all lighting and camera choices were made in consultation with director Miguel Sapochnik and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to make the nighttime battle look realistic.

Wagner added: “I know it wasn’t too dark because I shot it.”
