BBC extends Ultra HD trial to Wimbledon

UHD coverage will be available via iPlayer

The BBC has announced it will extend its Ultra HD trial currently in use for the FIFA World Cup to its coverage of this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Every match from Centre Court will be available via iPlayer throughout the two weeks of the tournament.

Like the World Cup, Ultra HD content will be available on a “first come first served” basis.

Viewers will need a connection of at least 40Mbit/s for the full 3840 pixel Ultra HD or 20Mbit/s for 2560 pixel Ultra HD. Footage will be played at 50 frames per second.

Matthew Postgate, BBC chief technology and product officer, said: “We’re delighted to confirm that our ground-breaking Ultra HD trial will now cover Wimbledon. Our Wimbledon trial on BBC iPlayer will be in stunning Ultra HD, HDR and use a wider range of colours, giving people the highest quality ever shown on the BBC.”
