Two weeks after the closing ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games, TVBEurope’s Sports Broadcast Europe 2010 conference presents a golden chance to hear first hand how the complex technical production of the event unfolded.

The conference takes place on October 28 at BAFTA in London. Commonwealth games Project Director, Alan Bright of SIS Live, will take delegates through the experience of working with host broadcaster Doordarshan and of managing the extensive logistics which included the technical production facilities and employing over 1000 crew to cover 17 sports across 12 venues in Delhi.

The summer was dominated by the soccer World Cup so naturally SBE has a significant focus on that. Dan Miodownick, Production Department Director at HBS, was tasked with balancing the expectations of broadcast rights holders and FIFA with what was practical in terms of covering the World Cup 2010. Miodownick will review the key planning decisions in South Africa and will look ahead to the infrastructure template for Brazil 2014.

It will be revealing to contrast this with an independent operation built outside of the host operation. Al Jazeera, ESPN and France 3 were just some of the broadcasters taking advantage of Input Media’s arrangement in Cape Town. Sky Sports News also launched its World Cup reports, including presentation of seven live shows every day during the tournament, from Input Media’s Broadcast Centre. Managing director David Johnson, explains how the company’s £1m investment in this operation paid off.

The recipient of the IBC2010 Innovation Award for Content Creation, and previous winner of a Sports Emmy will also be featured. The Red Bull Air Race is a spectacular production whose signal distribution involves bringing pictures and sound from across a huge area, and from the planes themselves. The organisers chose to carry everything – video, audio, communications and data – on one easily rigged fibre backbone. At Sports Broadcast Europe, the chief executive of SIVision, the production company behind this sophisticated outside broadcast event, will explain how it is technically achieved.
