TF1 to exclusively broadcast Rugby World Cup in France

Reportedly invested €45-50 million for Rugby World Cup and FIFA Women's World Cup rights

TF1 has announced that it will exclusively broadcast 2019 Rugby World Cup matches in France.

In April 2018, the channel renewed its distribution rights for the tournament. Canal Plus previously agreed to sublicense part of the 2011 and 2015 World Cups, with Eurosport signing a similar deal with TF1 for the 2007 tournament.

According to Les Echos, a TF1 executive said negotiations with potential partners had not brought an acceptable deal to the table, hence the exclusivity deal.

Industry sources claimed that TF1 invested €45-50 million to secure rights for this year’s Rugby World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup. At the end of 2017, the channel sold the exclusive rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup to Canal Plus.
