Sky is set to roll out UHD content for its new Sky Q service next month.

Starting August 13, the service will begin to broadcast what Sky is calling ‘the UK’s most comprehensive UHD service’, offering a wide range of Sky Q content, including sport, available in 4K live and on demand.

A total of 124 live Premier League football games will be available in 4K, as well as every 2017 Formula 1 race.

Sky will also make over 70 movies available in the format, including premieres of Spectre, The Revenant, and Bridge of Spies.

Sky Q customers with a compatible TV will be able to access UHD sports content by clicking an on-screen prompt when a UHD feed is available, rather than a dedicated ‘Sky Sports UHD’ channel.

“With Sky Q, we created the world’s best TV experience. Now with the introduction of an unrivalled line-up of UHD TV, the service is going to get even better, truly enhancing customers’ viewing experience,” said Sky’s director of TV and content products, Luke Bradley-Jones.

David Mercer Strategy Analytics principal analyst for digital consumer practice, explained, “While audience numbers are likely to be low in the early days, since Sky Q has only recently launched, this is an important statement from the UK’s leading pay-TV broadcaster that UHD is here to stay and represents the future of television viewing.”

“Sky has leapfrogged BT back into top spot with its UHD launch, which is the most comprehensive UHD service available in the UK, if not worldwide. BT will now be under pressure to expand its own UHD offer.”
