Sky launches legal challenge over Serie A rights

Sky has cited the so-called Melandri Law, which prohibits the sale of all broadcast rights to a single entity

Sky Italia has filed an appeal with a court in Milan over the decision to award DAZN the broadcast rights to Serie A for the next three seasons.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Sky has cited the so-called Melandri Law (i.e. Legislative Decree no. 9 of 2008) which governs the collective sale of Serie A media rights. It prohibits the sale of all broadcast rights to a single entity.

Last month DAZN won the rights to broadcast all 10 Serie A matches per week beginning with the 2021/2022 season.

However, one broadcast package is still up for grabs, which allows the winning bidder to also broadcast three of the weekly matches. That package is expected to be awarded today.
