Rohde & Schwarz scores Swisscom contract for World Cup encoding

Swisscom will employ AVHE100 video encoding and multiplexing system for UHD coverage

Swisscom has selected Rohde & Schwarz to provide ultra high definition (UHD) encoding facilities for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

The Swiss telco company will employ R&S AVHE100 video encoding and multiplexing system, as it provides support for UHD channels over an IPTV network for Swiss public broadcaster, SRG.

Rohde & Schwarz will supply a fully redundant UHD encoding platform that will enable SRG to distribute three channels of live and pre-recorded football content throughout the tournament.

“It’s not just outstanding image quality that attracted us to Rohde & Schwarz – it employs the lowest possible bitrate, which presents major operational advantages,” said Bruno Haug, head of TV development at Swisscom. “This efficiency enables us to provide UHD services to more viewers thanks to some unparalleled signal chain processing technology.”
